Egypt arrests satirist Bassam Youssef in press crackdown

CAIRO, Egypt, April 1, 2013 – In a move widely viewed as a crackdown on the press and free speech, Egyptian authorities arrested political satirist Bassem Youssef (also known as the “Egyptian Jon Stewart”) on charges of insulting Islam and President Morsi.

The questioning of the comedian has raised fears over freedom expression in the post-Mubarak Egypt.

“It is an escalation in an attempt to restrict space for critical expression,” said Heba Morayef, Egypt director at Human Rights Watch.
